With a potential site located amidst a pine forest on the edge of a dramatic hillside in Western, New York, O’Connor Architecture worked to complete a feasibility study and develop a schematic level design for a private grade school campus. The primary directive was to create a new identity for the school and to integrate a new building with the sloping site with minimal disruption to the natural surroundings. The design establishes an efficient array of classroom buildings interwoven in the site with a backbone of open collaborative zones fostering creativity, discovery, and play. The dark wood appearance creates a setting of tranquility in the woods, and the valley-facing edge glows westward on dark winter evenings.
